This molded fiberglass lounge chair was inspired by "Floating Figure," a sculpture by Gaston Lachaise. The La Chaise (1948) was a natural progression of plywood chairs developed a year prior in collaboration with Eero Saarinen. This collaboration took place in preparation for the "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

Charles and Ray Eames were jointly responsible for designing some of the most important pieces of twentieth-century. The mission of Charles and Ray Eames was to get the most of the best to the greatest number of people for the least had an enormous impact on twentieth-century design practice. Their achievements continue to be held in the highest regard today, as they are increasingly recognised as having single-handedly changed the course of modern design.

Charles Eames helped Eero Saarinen in the presentations for their designs for the Museum of Modern Art "Organic Design in Home Furnishings (1940)". Eames and Saarinen's designs produced by moulding plywood into intricate curves won them first prize.
