Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe designed the Barcelona Chair for the world exhibition in Barccelona. It was designed for the German Pavilion at the 1929. The building was extremely modern even by today’s standards.

The Barcelona Chairs were designed to compliment the pavilion during the fair. Their elegant form rendered them more as sculptural objects in the gallery-like Pavilion. The chairs became thrones when the Spanish Royals visited the Pavilion and sat in them for a time, however they were the only chairs in the whole building.
The Barcelona chair, sometimes referred to as the Pavilion chair, quickly gained a reputation as a modern classic. It went into commercial production immediately and has remained in production ever since.

Along with Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is seen as one of the twentieth-centuries tree most influential architects. His strict adherence to the modern movement, laid down in some fundamental rules of beauty in design, resulted in his claissic, and famous, Barcelona Chair (1929).

In 1929, Mies van der Rohe designed one of his most famous buildings, the German pavilion at the World Exhibition in Barcelona. Athough a temporary structure, the Barcelona pavilion has become one of the most influential buildngs in history.
